A Café Built Out of Love for Dogs
As dog parents (I believe the hip terms is pawrents? 🐶) ourselves — especially to two big, fluffy dogs named Toby and Keyla — we know how hard it is to find a café where pets are truly welcome. Our in-house dogs (okay, they’re not always here on account of the sheer difficulty of mobilizing around town with two 100+ lbs dogs) have to be in an air-conditioned room and while some places are pet friendly, they're pet friendly policies only extend to their outdoor areas, which can be difficult in our tropical heat.
At Cecemuwe, pets are welcome in all areas — our café, our event spaces, our cozy corners — as long as they follow our house rules. Why? Because this café was built for them.
The Story Behind Cecemuwe
A question we get often is: “Why did you start a pet-friendly café?”
The answer is: because of a dog.
Six years ago, my late dog Marco (don't ask, I didn't name him either) and I were always searching for the perfect café. I worked freelance at the time, spending long days in cafés around Jakarta. I loved the atmosphere, but every time I got home, guilt crept in — I’d left Marco alone for hours.
Back then, café culture in Jakarta looked very different. Interiors leaned industrial, food was passable at best (a lot of “okay” aglio olios and forgettable fried rice), and specialty coffee was only just beginning. They weren’t bad cafés, but they didn’t check all the boxes: good food, good coffee, clean toilets (a must if you’re staying eight hours!), and space for pets.
So I thought: why not build my own?
My non-negotiables were simple:
Good specialty coffee
Dogs allowed inside
Friendly service
Wholesome, freshly made comfort food
And yes, clean toilets (no compromise! If I'm three lattes in, I don't want to choose between a yucky toilet and a UTI, thank you! )
That’s how Cecemuwe was born: as a tribute to Marco, a sweet soul who deserved a place where pets could sit with their families, eat pupsicles, and be together any day of the week.
A Work in Progress — With You
Is Cecemuwe perfect? No. The space shows its age, and so do I, unfortunately. But we keep growing (sideways for me, again, unfortunately), adjusting, and learning with the community that has embraced us. Did we say how grateful we are for you? Well, we are. So onwards we go, working to catch up with the community that we built and always with the convictions we've had since day one.
Marco has since crossed the rainbow bridge, but his memory is why we’ll always remain pet-friendly. Because we know you have your own “Marco.” And you deserve a place where you can grab coffee, enjoy lunch, and spend the whole day with your pets by your side. You deserve to go home feeling productive and only have anxiety from having consumed too much caffeine, not from having to leave your dog alone for hours.
So there it is, the why of Cecemuwe. Cecemuwe is not just ours — it’s yours.
House Rules for Pets
Yes, we're pet-friendly. Yes, we still have rules. To keep the café safe and comfortable for everyone, here are a few simple guidelines:
Potty trained or diapered: We sell diapers at the counter. There’s also a small garden with a hose, or the public park across the street.
Accidents happen: If they do, please clean up and let our team know so we can help.
Leash & supervision required: For safety, keep your pets on a leash, lap, or carrier/stroller at all times.
These rules aren’t about restriction — they’re about keeping your pets safe and about respecting others. As pet parents, we represent the community whenever we bring our furry ones out.
